How to Back Up Your Computer Before It's Too Late
Most people do not back up their computers until after they lose something important. Here is a simple guide to keeping your files safe, written in plain English for everyday computer users.
Why Backups Matter
Hard drives fail. Computers get viruses. Laptops get stolen or dropped. When any of these things happen, the only thing standing between you and losing every photo, document, and file you own is a backup.
The good news is that backing up your computer is easier than most people think, and most options cost very little.
The Three Main Ways to Back Up
1. External Hard Drive
An external hard drive plugs into your USB port and can store a full copy of your computer. Windows has a built-in backup tool (File History) and Mac has Time Machine. Plug the drive in, set up the backup once, and it runs automatically every time the drive is connected.
Good for: Large collections of photos, videos, and files. One-time cost, no subscription.
2. Cloud Backup
Services like OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud, and Backblaze automatically upload your files to the internet as you work. If your computer is lost, stolen, or fails, your files are safe online.
Good for: Automatic protection without having to remember to plug anything in. Usually $0 to $10 per month.
3. The 3-2-1 Rule
The safest approach: keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different types of storage, with 1 copy offsite (meaning cloud). This way, no single event can wipe out all your files.
What to Back Up
- Photos and videos (especially irreplaceable ones)
- Documents, tax records, and important files
- Emails and contacts
- Browser bookmarks and saved passwords
- Music and purchased downloads
