A slow computer is the most common complaint we hear at Comp-u-Doc. The good news: in most cases, your computer is not broken — it just needs a tune-up. Here’s what actually makes computers slow and what we do to fix it.
Too many startup programs
Every app you install wants to start with Windows. Over time, dozens of programs load in the background without you knowing, eating up memory and processing power before you even open a browser. Disabling unnecessary startup items is one of the fastest wins in any tune-up.
Malware and adware
Hidden programs running in the background — not always caught by basic antivirus — can severely slow a computer. A thorough malware scan and cleanup is always part of our tune-up process.
A full or cluttered hard drive
When your hard drive is nearly full, Windows struggles to find space to work. Clearing temporary files, emptying the recycle bin properly, and cleaning up system junk can free several gigabytes and noticeably speed things up. On older computers, switching from a traditional hard drive to an SSD is often the single biggest speed upgrade possible.
Outdated drivers and Windows updates
Old drivers and a Windows installation that hasn’t been kept current can cause slowdowns and instability. Keeping everything updated is part of good computer hygiene — and something many people overlook.
When hardware is the real issue
Sometimes a failing hard drive, insufficient RAM, or overheating is the culprit. We check hardware health during every tune-up so you know exactly what you’re dealing with before spending any money on repairs or upgrades.
