Wi-Fi Not Working? A Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide

Wi-Fi problems are one of the most common tech calls we get in Rhode Island. Before you call anyone, try these steps in order. Most connection problems can be resolved in under 10 minutes.

Step 1: Restart Everything

This solves the majority of Wi-Fi issues. Turn off your router and modem (unplug them from the wall), wait 30 seconds, then plug them back in. Wait about 2 minutes for everything to reconnect, then test your internet.

Also restart the device that is having trouble connecting.

Step 2: Check If It Is Just One Device

Try connecting another device (phone, tablet, another computer) to the same Wi-Fi network. If that device works fine, the problem is with your original device, not the network. If nothing connects, the problem is with your router or internet service.

Step 3: Check the Basics on Your Computer

  • Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on (look for a Wi-Fi toggle in your taskbar)
  • Make sure you are connected to your network and not a neighbor's
  • Try forgetting the network and reconnecting with the password
  • Check that Airplane Mode is not on
  • Try updating your network adapter drivers

Step 4: Check Your Router

Look at the lights on your router and modem. Your internet provider's manual (or their website) shows what the lights should look like when everything is working. If a light is red or off when it should be on, call your internet provider.

Step 5: Distance and Interference

Wi-Fi signal weakens with distance and through walls. If you are far from your router, a Wi-Fi extender or mesh network may help. Microwaves, cordless phones, and neighboring networks can also cause interference. Try moving closer to the router to test.

When to Call for Help

If you have tried all of the above and still cannot connect, or if the problem keeps coming back, it is time for a professional to take a look. The issue may be a failing router, a network adapter problem on your computer, or a settings conflict that needs diagnosis.
