When people search for a "computer speed test," they usually mean one of two things: testing their internet connection speed, or testing how fast their actual computer is. Both matter, and both are easy to do for free. This guide covers both, explains what the numbers mean, and tells you what to do when the results are not what you hoped.
Step 1: Test your internet speed first
Before assuming your computer is the problem, rule out your internet connection. A slow connection makes everything feel slow, from loading web pages to video calls to streaming. The fastest way to check is to go to speedtest.net or fast.com and click the button. The test takes about 30 seconds and shows you three numbers: download speed, upload speed, and ping (latency).
Here is what those numbers mean for typical home use:

Step 2: Check CPU and RAM usage in Task Manager
Task Manager is a free built-in tool that shows you exactly how hard your computer is working right now. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open it, then click the Performance tab. You will see live graphs for CPU, Memory (RAM), Disk, and Network.
What to look for: if your CPU is sitting above 80 percent while you are not doing anything demanding, something is using it up in the background. If your RAM is nearly full, your computer is being forced to use the hard drive as overflow memory, which is much slower. Either situation explains a slow computer even when it is a few years old.
Step 3: Test your hard drive speed
Your storage drive is often the single biggest factor in how fast your computer feels. A free tool called CrystalDiskMark (download from crystalmark.info) runs a benchmark in about two minutes and shows you read and write speeds in MB/s.
Here is a rough guide to what the numbers mean:

If you are on an older spinning hard drive, upgrading to an SSD is the single most impactful thing you can do for your computer's speed. Most people who do this describe the result as feeling like a brand new machine.
Step 4: Run a full benchmark
If you want a complete picture of your computer's overall performance, a free tool called Novabench tests your CPU, RAM, and graphics together and gives you a single score you can compare against other computers of a similar age. It takes about 5 minutes to run and does not require any technical knowledge.
A significantly below-average score for your computer's age and specs is a good indicator that something is holding it back, whether that is malware, failing hardware, outdated drivers, or simply too many programs loaded at startup.
Warning signs in your test results
Some results point to problems that go beyond a simple tune-up. Watch for these:
CrystalDiskMark shows very low speeds on an SSD (under 200 MB/s read) can indicate a failing drive. Back up your files immediately and have it checked.
High CPU usage at idle often means malware or a runaway process. Run a full malware scan before anything else.
Frequent speed dips to near zero on the Disk graph in Task Manager can mean the drive is struggling. This is especially common with older HDDs.
RAM at 90 percent or more at idle means you either have too little RAM for your workload or something is consuming memory it should not be.
